Summit Overview

Europe-Africa Business Summit 2008 is the first biennial Europe-Africa Business Summit to take place in Europe, organised by private non-governmental bodies and strives to increase European private sector awareness of the many commercial opportunities in Africa. The major theme of the summit is

“The State and the Future of the European-African Economic Relationships”.

Coherent with the New Partnership for Africa’s Development objectives (NEPAD), the summit aims to provide a critical assessment of the current state and future of the European – African economic relationships. More specifically, the summit will:

  • present a critical assessment of current trade and investment climate in Africa and address specific policy issues that confront the European private sector in the African market place,
  • identify specific intra- and inter- regional needs in Africa and encourage multi-lateral co-operation between international investors and role-players, business practitioners and policy makers,
  • identify and review the need for trade-related technical assistance and capacity-building in terms of partnership with Africa,
  • showcase key development initiatives to the private & public sectors of the many commercial opportunities on both continents,
  • offer a biannual international platform for European and African enterprises, business leaders, policy makers, academics to share ideas and build confidence/consensus around developing creative and sustainable business relationships.

Summit Agenda
The Main Events will consist of plenary sessions, Workshops, Private Meetings, Lighthouse Projects Presentation, Exhibition and opening Session Media Event.

The summit will take place at the New Congress Center Hamburg (CCH) in Hamburg. The center is the second largest in Germany and the most modern convention facility in Europe with extensive conferencing and exhibition facilities used for events of national and international significance. The New CCH is in the center of the city, just two minutes away from the high speed Railway station. Its special benefit is that the two areas of business, Congress and Exhibitions/Trade Fair can be utilized together perfectly due to their proximity to one another.

The major language of the summit will be English.

The summit will address priority sector topics covering the major market segments like: Agri-Food, Construction and Building Products, Consumer Goods, Education Services and Training, Environment, Health, Information and Communication Technology, Infrastructure (Energy & power, Water, Transport), Culture, Arts & entertainment, Mining.

The EABS event is planned as a real matchmaking event between African and European enterprises and will primarily benefit those enterprises by way of offering an enabling platform for them to create or foster the business partnership relationships among them. Secondly, Africa and Europe will benefit as a whole because of the enlarged and positive audience it will receive based on their business opportunities.

Expected Attendance
About 600 delegates from Africa including speakers, decision makers from the private- and public sectors are expected at the summit. All together, the conferences, workshops and other meetings at the event are so organised that on average about 40% of the time of day remain for the delegates to attend the fair and Business discussions. Up to 100 exhibitors are expected with about 50 exhibitors from the European Union and 50  from Africa. To the fair, approx. 10,000 visitors are expected, of which in the broadest sense about 50%  are specialized visitors.
